This school booklet should help your child settle in quickly to Moneystown National School. School Ethos: Moneystown is a co-educational Catholic Primary School under the patronage of the Dublin Archdiocese whose patron is the Archbishop of Dublin. We welcome all children, respecting the diversity of values, beliefs, traditions, languages and ways of life in Irish society. In our school community we aim to cultivate a caring and stimulating environment where every child is enabled to realise his/her full potential, morally, socially, emotionally and academically and which encourages respect for him/herself, for others and for the child s own environment. Moneystown N.S. operates under the guidelines of the Department of Education and Science and follows the D.E.S. curriculum. Our Motto is Festina Lente - hasten slowly 1. History of the School: The school was established 1st September 1887 with Miss Rose Madden the first principal teacher. Over the years Moneystown N.S. has grown from a one-teacher school to a six-teacher school. In 2006 the old building was completely refurbished and extended at a cost of 2.3 million and now comprises four new permanent classrooms, library, staff room, resource room, ancillary rooms and P.E. Hall. School Timetable: The school is open to receive pupils from 8.50 am each morning ; it closes for infants at 1.30 pm and for all other children at 2.30 pm. Please remember that supervision is not provided for children on school grounds prior to school opening time so we would encourage you to drop your child off as close to 8.50 am as possible. Unnecessary stress can be avoided if children arrive on time for school and are collected punctually at the end of the day. N.B. In the event of an unavoidable delay in collecting your child, please contact the school immediately to inform us of your alternative arrangements so that we may reassure your child . 2. Attendance: Parents are responsible for ensuring that their child attends school regularly. It is in your child s interest to ensure not only that he/she attends regularly, but is also punctual. Notes are required 1. Following a child s absence from school stating reason for absence. 2. If a child has to leave the school during school hours. In the case of children who are absent for more than twenty days in a school year, the Education Welfare Officer will be contacted as a matter of procedure. This is in accordance with the Education Welfare Act 2000. (To help you keep track of your child s absences, the school will inform you when your child has reached 15 days absence.) As far as possible we would request that parents ensure that family holidays coincide with school holidays. Homework: Homework is set from Monday to Thursday nights incl. Homework notebooks should be checked and signed each night. They are a good means of 3. communication between the school and the home. We favour giving a limited amount of homework. We like to emphasise, however, that the exercise given should not involve any unfamiliar skills, but should give children practice in using skills previously taught in school. Homework is not limited to written work reading, spellings and tables are also a very important part of your child s homework and should also be checked. School Uniform: Royal Blue Sweatshirt with School Crest Navy Trousers/Skirt/Pinafore White or Pale Blue Aertex shirt with Collar Black/Navy Shoes The sweatshirt with school crest is available from Patrick Kenna Moneystown, Roundwood. Phone 086 2465851 / 0404 45097 Sample sizes will be available in the school on notified dates. The rest of the uniform can be purchased in local shops and department stores. P.E Gear Navy Tracksuit and runners are available from local shops or department stores. Slippers/Indoor Shoes for Classroom- 4. Children are required to wear sensible, flat shoes in to school and change into their indoor shoes/slippers for class. Any jewellery worn should be kept to a minimum stud earrings and watch only in the interest of the child s safety. Children are required to wear indoor shoes during school time. Please ensure that clothing, shoes etc. are clearly labelled. Parking: In the interest of safety, parents are requested to park in front of the church when dropping off or collecting their children. When parking, please try to leave a space of at least 4 feet between your car and the church wall, to allow children to walk out unhindered, rather than walking around cars. The committee of the Community Hall has very kindly agreed to allow parking in their grounds both morning and afternoon to help alleviate parking congestion, but please be aware that your child must be accompanied by an adult when crossing the road. ONLY Staff cars should be parked in front of the school. School Books: Pupils should treat schoolbooks, equipment and school property with respect. Books should be covered and kept clean, as pupils are encouraged to pass them on. Pupils must have all the necessary books. *Books, copies, pencils cases etc. must be clearly labelled. Book lists are available in June of each year when we will invite a bookseller to the school for the convenience of parents. 5. Code of Behaviour: The children from the school are generally very well behaved and on many occasions have been complimented on their good manners when taken on school outings. Our code of behaviour reflects the vision of the child at the centre of the learning process and we hope to ensure that each child is provided with experiences that are relevant and age appropriate to his/her needs in a disruptive-free environment. Through co-operation and support between the home and the school, this should be fulfilled. 1. Every effort is made by staff to adopt a positive approach to the question of behaviour in the school. 2. The school places great emphasis on positive reinforcment through praise and encouragement in the belief that this will, in the long run, give the best results. It is agreed that a high standard of behaviour requires a strong sense of community within the school and a high level of co-operation among staff and between staff, pupils and parents. A pupil will be referred to the Principal for serious breaches of discipline and/or for repeated incidents of misbehaviour. 5. Gross and serious breaches of discipline will be referred to the Board of Management who will deal with the matter in accordance with the guidelines of the D.E.S. 6. A written record may be kept of these instances of misbehaviour and before resorting to serious sanctions, the normal channels of communication between school and parents will be utilised in the hope of resolving the matter. We strongly feel that no pupil should deny any other pupil the right to reap the full benefit from his/her education. A copy of the school s Code of Behaviour is sent to parents of all new pupils and is available for inspection in the school. Safety Statement: In the interest of safety, children must walk quietly from one area of the school to another. They must behave in an orderly manner at all times. They are encouraged to respect others and their property. Swinging on chairs is actively discouraged. They must pass and not throw an item to another pupil. Fire drill will be carried out once during each term. A copy of the school s Safety Policy is available for inspection in the school. Bullying: Incidents of bullying, both verbal and physical, will not be tolerated and will be dealt with in accordance with the school s Code of Behaviour. All incidents should be reported to the class teacher. The school s Anti-Bullying Policy is sent to parents of new pupils and is available for inspection in the school. 7. Illness & Medication: If your child is suffering from short-term medical conditions, the responsibility is on the parents to administer medication, as no teacher can be required to administer medicine or drugs to a pupil. In the case of children with a long-term medical condition, the parents and the Board of Management must enter into an agreement about the administration of medicines. If your child suffers from any ongoing medical condition or from any allergy which the school should know about, please inform the principal/class teacher in writing. If your child requires long-term medication you are required to apply, in writing, to the Board of management and must sign a disclaimer form indemnifying the school from any responsibility. (See the school policy document on Administration of Medicines for further details). First Aid: Basic First Aid is given in the cases of accidents. In the event of serious accidents or emergency, parents will be immediately informed and medical aid sought. Therefore it is vitally important that you supply the school with your contact number and an emergency contact number. 8. You will also be asked permission to bring your child to hospital in the event of an emergency. The school should be made aware of any changes to these numbers immediately. Health & Hygiene The school must be notified immediately if your child has headlice or any serious infectious illnesses (e.g. chickenpox, measles, whooping cough, impetigo, conjunctivitis etc.) The school will then pass the relevant information on to all families. Please, please be assured that no child or family will be identified. We advise that children who are unwell be kept at home. This would also help prevent the spread of infection in the school. Invariably those who are ill or unwell coming to school may have to be sent home. Lunches: We would encourage parents to provide nourishing packed lunches fruit, yoghurt, sandwiches, milk etc. Sweets, crisps, chocolate bars and fizzy drinks are not permitted as part of children s lunches. Chewing gum is prohibited. In the interest of safety, children should not have glass bottles or cans in their schoolbags. Children are prohibited from swapping lunches. Young children especially should be given small lunches that they can manage independently. (See School s Healthy Lunch Policy) 9. Curriculum: The following subjects are covered in Moneystown National School - English Gaeilge Mathematics Social Personal and Health Education Physical Education History Science Drama Music Visual Arts Geography Religion Extra Curricular Classes: The Parents Committee organises extra curricular classes after school hours depending on availability and demand. Currently these are: French, Tennis, Yoga and Irish Dancing. 10. Library: Pupils are encouraged to borrow and enjoy library books. They can borrow them for a reasonable length of time. Library books inadvertently left at home should be returned to the school library please. The Mobile Library visits Moneystown every 2nd Thursday for 30 minutes. The children from 3rd class to 6th class are given the opportunity to borrow and exchange books at this time. Insurance: All children are covered under the schools insurance. However, an optional personal insurance is available to pupils attending the school. A renewal form will be issued in June with the book list. Litter: Moneystown National School is a Green School and there is a strict anti-litter policy both within and outside of the school building. We expect all members of the school community and visitors to respect same. Mobile Phones: Children are not allowed to have mobile phones in their possesion on the school premises. If a child needs to have a mobile phone for after school, it will be kept by the class teacher until home time. If a child or parent needs to be contacted, they can do so on the school phone. Moneystown N.S. Phone Number (0404) 45477 11. Parent-School Communication: Please avail of the pupil homework journal to write a note or to send a message to the class teacher. While teachers do meet parents on an informal basis before/after school, if a private or serious matter needs to be discussed, an appointment can be arranged for a specific agreed time. Notes regarding absences should be written separately. Formal parent teacher meetings will be arranged early in the second term. A written report is sent home to parents at the end of each school year. Special Needs/Learning Support: The school aims to provide a curriculum, which meets the needs of all pupils in a fully integrated setting. Class teachers monitor the progress of all children. Subject to parental consent and departmental regulations, additional help is available from one of the two support teachers (Learning and Resource). Admissions: Enrolment forms are available from the Principal or School Secretary on request. A copy of the Enrolment Policy is available for inspection in the school. 12. Parent Association: We have a very active Parent Association in the school, which promotes general interest in the welfare of the school. All parents are members of the Parents Association and we encourage you to attend meetings and become involved. The Board of Management: Our B.O.M. consists of the following people - Chairperson Joe McKenna Principal Maeve Tierney Teacher Michelle Mannix Treasurer Anne Payne Ann Ward Brian Doyle Fr. Paul Kelly P.P. Oliver O Neill Educational Outings: Prior to any school outing we require the written consent of the child s parent/guardian. Every child is expected to attend these outings. The children from the school are generally well behaved and we consider such trips to form a valuable part of the children s education. 13. Staff Meetings: Occasionally, it is necessary to close the school early to facilitate staff meetings. Parents will be notified in advance and we do not expect these to exceed more than five meetings a year. Emergency Closing: Under the Department of Education and Science Rule 60 the school can be closed without prior notice under exceptional circumstances (e.g. snow, power failure, road flooding etc.). Where possible the school will contact East Coast Radio with notice of closure. Also check the school phone for a recorded message. Members of Staff: Principal Maeve Tierney Deputy Principal & Resource Teacher Maebhe Durston Learning Support Teacher Ann Doyle Teacher Louise Conheady Teacher Michelle Mannix Teacher Gary McGillycuddy SNA Elaine Kenna Secretary Lynda O Dea Teacher Louise Hegarty Teacher Michelle Mannix Special Needs Assistants Elaine Kenna Jane Lockey Secretary Lynda O Dea 14. 14. School Funding: Moneystown N.S. is totally dependent on grants and teacher resources provided by the Department of Education and Science and operates within the regulations laid down by the Department. From time to time, throughout the school year, parents will be asked to fund school outings and school related activities. In June parents will be asked to buy the following year s books and to pay for Art & Crafts, photocopying and personal insurance. We also operate a book rental scheme for certain subjects and the school encourages parents to buy second hand books where possible. Expenses will be kept to a minimum at all times. Readiness for school (a checklist): There are some tasks which, if you child was able to carry out by the time they start school, would be of great benefit to him/her and would be valuable time-savers in the classroom. Can your child do the following? Open and close schoolbag and pencil case Open and close lunch box and drinks container Do up/undo own belt/trousers Use a rubber or sharpen a pencil Colour a picture Listen to a story 15. Dress and undress him/herself Take off his/her coat, gloves and hat and hang them up. Change shoes and slippers. Use the toilet properly and flush it Wash and dry his/her face and hands. Tidy and clear away his/her toys Use a handkerchief Share his/her toys and is prepared to take turns. Say his/her name and address. If your child can do most of these things, he/she will feel happier in school. Additional Information: Please check your child s school bag at home for notes. Please check homework notebooks daily. No glass bottles or cans allowed. In the interest of mutual respect, no bad language will be tolerated in the school. Parents are asked to park in the area in front of the church only, and to use the side gate to enter and exit the school. Leave a space of 4 ft approx between wall and car to allow children to pass safely. Household Pets, especially dogs are not allowed on the school grounds or in the school building at any time during school hours due to the obvious safety and health risks. Children are not permitted to leave school grounds unsupervised during school time under any circumstances. Children are not permitted to climb on the school walls or property. School grounds are off limits before and after school hours without prior permission. Parents are required to drop children to school on time and to collect them promptly after school. By law, smoking is not permitted in the school building or on the school grounds. 16.
